NEW YORK, (PRLM).- Bintang film Bollywood Shahrukh Khan mendapat pengalaman tak mengenakkan pagi di bandara Newark, Amerika Serikat, ketika ia ditahan dan ditanya selama sekitar dua jam sebelum kantor perwakilan misi India campur tangan dan menjamin pembebasannya.

Khan, 43, ditahan oleh petugas imigrasi yang ingin tahu mengapa ia mengunjungi AS dan pertanyaan-pertanyaan lain setelah namanya muncul di layar komputer di tempat pemeriksaan.

Aktor itu, yang bermaksud ke Chicago untuk ikut serta dalam perayaan Hari Kemerdekaan, mengatakan peristiwa itu "sedikit memalukan" bagi dirinya.

"Ini nama Muslim dan saya pikir nama tersebut biasa dalam daftar mereka," katanya kepada saluran televisi India melalui telepon.

Di New Delhi, Duta Besar AS Timothy J Roemer melukiskan Khan sebagai "ikon global" yang merupakan tamu yang patut mendapat sambutan di AS.

"Saya ditahan...Saya dibawa ke satu ruang tempat beberapa orang lain menunggu pemeriksaan imigrasi. Mereka kelihatan jelas orang Asia," kata Khan.

"Saya menunggu tas-tas yang saya bawa...Saya pikir enaknya mereka bawa saya ke ruang lain...Tetapi jelas bahwa para petugas melakukan pengecakan kedua," ujarnya bintang film itu dengan nada marah, seraya menambahkan "Saya punya dokumen lengkap."

Khan mengatakan ia berulang kali memberitahu para petugas bahwa dirinya seorang bintang film dan meminta mereka mengizinkannya berbicara dengan penghubungnya di AS, tapi tak diizinkan pada awalnya.

"Mereka mengatakan kontak telepon tak diperbolehkan. Tapi kemudian mereka mengizinkan sekali saja. Kemudian saya kirim pesan ke sekretaris saya, ke rumah dan ke (anggota parlemen dari Kongres Rajiv) Shukla," ujarnya.

Khan mengatakan Shukla memberitahu kantor perwakilan India yang segera menghubungi pihak terkait dan menjamin pembebasannya. "Mereka (para pejabat India) sungguh sangat membantu," kata Khan.

"Saya selalu khawatir jika bepergian ke Amerika. Saya malu karena hal ini. Saya tidak seperti seorang teroris yang akan melakukan sesuatu terhadap negara itu."

Khan, yang telah beberapa kali ke AS untuk pengambilan gambar film paling terakhirnya "My Name is Khan", mengatakan peristiwa tersebut bukan yang pertama menimpanya.

"Ini bukan peristiwa yang pertama. Tapi saya sendirian saat ini. Ini sedikikit memalukan," katanya.

Aktor itu, yang akan kembali ke India pada 20 Agustus, menolak menyebut insiden itu terkait dengan rasial, tetapi mengatakan hal ini terkait dengan nama Muslimnya. (das)***
